SC1-17F and SC1-9S Homework 10-11- November 2017

Do EITHER the essay question on page 66 of the students' book OR one of the questions below, which we made up during our classes this week. Make sure to refer to pages 186-7 of the student's book before you write your essay. In each case, aim to write 220-260 words. Please indicate which essay question you have answered


Mark’s question

1) Your class has had a discussion about the role of robots and AI in education and how it may affect teaching and learning in the future. Write an essay for your teacher discussing two or three of the challenges presented by using robots and AI to teach and saying whether you think it is a positive or negative prospect.

2) Your class has had a discussion about the fact that children nowadays want to grow up too fast. You discussed the following points:
-         Measures taken by parents
-         Difference in habits of different generations
-         The need to raise awareness of bars and clubs.
Write an essay for your tutor discussing how the issue can be tackled and focusing on two priorities. You may use the ideas in the class discussion points or your own.

3) Your class has attended a lecture on the measures governments can take to ensure that a minimum quality of life is maintained for people who were victims of the recent fires. The following ideas were included in the discussion:
-         Raising funds for the villagers
-         Donation of clothes, food, toiletries etc.
-         Charities
Write an essay for your tutor discussing two priorities for helping the villagers affected. You should explain which priority you think is more important and easier to implement, giving reasons to support your opinion.

4) Your class has attended a lecture about how travelling affects your life, focusing on its benefits. Some of the topics discussed were:
  • Broadening your horizons
  • Positive effects on longevity
  • (Add your own idea)
Write an essay for your tutor discussing these topics and establishing a connection between them.  



5) Your class visited a psychiatric hospital where an experiment was carried out. Elderly patients were encouraged to respond to music with body language. You made the notes below:
  • Improved mobility
  • Increased energy levels
  • Increased happiness leading to a healthier mind
Write an essay for your tutor discussing the implementation of the use of music in psychiatric hospitals. You should explain the beneficial aspects using your notes. Write your essay in 220-260 words in an appropriate style.


6) Your class has had a discussion about the regime of Kim Jong-un and how it affects the citizens of North Korea. You have made the notes below:
  • Money used for military purposes
  • Major restrictions of communication, transportation etc.
  • Devotion to the leader

Write an essay for your tutor, discussing two ideas about the current situation in North Korea. You should explain what is the worst aspect of the situation, giving reasons to support your opinion.

Friday evening AND Saturday morning SC1 classes: English Vocabulary in Use Advanced - Unit 25

It's high time we started using English Vocabulary in Use Advanced, so to accompany the next unit of the coursebook, as homework, I'd like you to work through Unit 25 of English Vocabulary in Use Advanced - Travel and Accommodation. I'll test vocabulary from this unit as we finish Unit 8 of the coursebook, which is also on the theme of travel. Don't leave this until the last minute - there's a lot of vocabulary to learn!

Writing Homework SC1 Friday and Saturday Class

Homework is EITHER: 

i) Do the writing task in activity 4, page 54 of the coursebook.

OR 

ii) Answer this question: 
You recently saw the film 'War of the Buttons'. Write a review of this film and another film of your choice, comparing their suitability for use in the English language classroom, and saying which one you think would be more suitable and why. 

OR

iii) Answer this question: 
An international student magazine based in the UK is seeking reviews from students of films that focus on people who have contributed to society. Write a review of a film which focuses on the life of someone who has contributed to society, commenting on whether you learned anything new about the person’s life from the film, and whether it helped you understand what motivated this person to make their contribution. The person in the film you review should either be from the UK or from your country of origin. 

All reviews should be 220-260 words. To be handed in either next class (3/4 February) or the class after (10/11 February).

Last class and homework for 27 or 28 January

The important things to have covered for next class, if you missed the class, are the grammar exercises (2, 3 and 4) on page 49 of the coursebook, and the reading exercises 2 and 3 on page 50 of the coursebook. 

Homework was the vocabulary exercises (5 and 6) on page 50 of the coursebook, and read the text, 'Naturally High' on page 52 of the coursebook.

Mock CAE Exam This Week

A reminder that the mock CAE exam takes place this week on Friday 13 January for Friday students and Saturday 14 January for Saturday students! The exam will take up the whole class, and it is important that you arrive on time!
