Last Class

Tomorrow is our last class! Here are things you need to think about for tomorrow.

I would like to use part of the first half of the class to look at the reports you wrote as an in-class writing. Please remember to bring the in-class writing with you so that you can ask questions about the corrections. This applies to everyone, whether or not you passed, and including the people who sent me a second writing task.

An activity I suggested for the second half of the class was for everyone to bring in a favourite song or video clip, talk about why they like it, and then play it to the class. The idea was met by reactions varying from blank stares to rolling eyes, so I guess you didn't like it very much. :) If anyone does feel moved to bring a song or clip, please feel free to do so, but I have prepared a couple of light activities to do in the second half, so you don't need to worry about this.

See you tomorrow!

Tests

First of all, I have corrected the tests. With one exception, the marks ranged from 18-22/25 on the progress test section, with just one person narrowly failing with 14/25. Everyone passed the reading and the listening tests. One person got 100% on the listening and one person got 100% on the reading. All will be revealed next lesson!

Information about parents' meetings:

First, where possible, I prefer to see parents and students together where possible.

The link to the spreadsheet with the times of the meetings is on the portal. I can't put it here as the blog is public. Anyway, everyone should have the slip with their own time. If you or your parents need to change the time of the meeting, either ask your parents to email me at my work address, which you copied down last class, or ask me to make the change next lesson. Students who were absent last class can either email my work address to book a time when they have looked at the spreadsheet, or book a time next class.

Important: Note that students who are 18 or who will be 18 by the day of the parents' meetings will be considered adults at that point. This means that you need either to come to the meeting with your parents or to let me know categorically that you are happy for me to speak to your parents about your progress without your being there. I will speak to you about this next class.

Extra Writing Task

Here's the writing task for this week's homework. Note that this homework is intended for students who failed the in-class writing - students who passed the in-class writing do not need to do this. The absolute deadline for getting this writing to me is Wednesday 27 May. After that I will not have time to correct the work and include the mark in your results for this term.

Your city council has decided to add a section to its website for students from other countries who are considering your city as a place to study at university. You have been asked to write a report for the project, commenting on the attractions of your city as a place to live and study, and noting any challenges students from other countries might face when living there. Write your report in 220 - 260 words.

Test this week

As you know, in this week's lesson (22 May) we'll do the last progress test. I have decided to use the full progress test for the unit. That means we'll need to do a tiny bit of grammar (conjunctions on page 105) before we do the test, so make sure you arrive on time this week!
The test will also include a reading and a listening.

Have you read the text for this week's homework yet? According to my goo.gl link statistics, only 3 people have clicked on the link in the homework on the Portal so far. The link is a text that you need to read for tomorrow's lesson. Please make sure to go to the Portal today and look at the homework!

Homework from Teen Advanced Blue, class 5 (April 17 2015)

Here is the homework, which I put on the student portal at the beginning of this week. Could everyone please try to access the portal this week, and let me know in class if you have any problems? Your user name, remember, is your student number.

Homework:
Do the review activities on page 77 of the coursebook
Study for the next test! The test will comprise:
(i) A grammar and vocabulary test based on unit 7
(ii) An in-class composition - a report - based on the report question on page 76 of the coursebook, question 4.
If you would like some extra work on report-writing, you can do questions 1 and 2 (not 3) on page 53 of the exam maximiser.

Finally, can you please bring your Exam Maximiser to class this week? Thanks!
