Homework January 24th

Look again at the text 'Coming of Age in Japan' on page 45 of the student book. Write down the answers to these questions:

1. How old are people in Japan when they come of age?

2. Where is the ceremony held?

3. Why do girls not usually buy the kimono for the ceremony?

4. Why do they go to a special place to put the kimono on?

5. Do men wear kimonos?

6. What do the young people listen to in the hall?

7. Who gives them a present?

8. What do they do at the end of the ceremony?

Grasshopper

Caine: I hear the water, I hear the birds.
Master Po: Do you hear your own heartbeat?
Caine: No.
Master Po: Do you hear the grasshopper that is at your feet?
Caine: [looking down and seeing the insect] Old man, how is it that you hear these things?
Master Po: Young man, how is it that you do not?

Last night we looked at:

going to - plans, things you intend to do

might - predictions, possibility.
Pedro might be able to swim in his friend's pool this summer.
Inês might give a Christmas concert next December.

We also revised the simple past tense, and looked at some irregular verbs:

buy - bought
be - was/were
have - had
go - went
get - got
write - wrote

We talked about our Christmas holidays, we talked about what we did in 2007, and we talked about our plans for 2008.

Now, write a paragraph about what you did in 2007 and what you plan to do in 2008. You should write between 50-100 words. The questions below are to help you with this. You don't have to answer all the questions, and you don't have to answer them in order. They are there to give you some ideas.
